How Long It Takes

Start to Finish

A fully finished European mount typically runs 2–8 months from drop-off. Every skull is different — each animal has its own grease level, and some species are far greasier than others, which can shorten or stretch the degreasing stage. A beetle-cleaned only skull is much faster, usually 2–8 weeks depending on the volume of skulls we currently have in the queue. We'll give you a real estimate when we see the skull.

1

Intake & rough prep

We skin, remove the brain, and trim away the bulk tissue. 1–7 days depending on backlog.

2

Beetle cleaning

The dermestid colony does the detail work. Turnaround depends on how many skulls we have in the queue — anywhere from 2–8 weeks for a beetle-only clean.

3

Degreasing

Warm water soaks with degreaser pull oils from the bone. Anywhere from 1 month to 1 year depending on the animal and how much grease is in the skull. This is the longest step. Degreasing is a slow process and is the only true way to get all the grease out of bone — there is no shortcut for this process, no matter what anyone tells you.

4

Whitening & finish

Peroxide whitening, teeth re-set, sealed, plaque mounted if requested. About 1 week.
