What's the difference between a beetle-cleaned skull and a fully finished skull?

A beetle-cleaned skull has been stripped of all flesh by our dermestid beetle colony, leaving raw, natural bone. It will still have a strong odor and grease in the bone. A fully finished skull goes through the additional steps of degreasing, whitening (peroxide treatment), and reassembly of any loose teeth or bones. The result is a bright, display-ready piece that won't yellow or grease over time.

What is the shipping and handling time?

Once your order is placed, in-stock pieces ship within 2–5 business days. You'll get tracking as soon as the package is on its way. We ship with USPS and most packages arrive within 2-10 days after being shipped.

Will my skull stink?

Fully processed skulls will have low to no odor. However, if beetle-cleaned only, it will have a very distinct odor.

If I send in my own skull, how long does it take?

Accepted Answer

Turnaround depends on the species and the service. A beetle-cleaned only skull is usually much quicker. A fully finished skull (degreased and whitened) can take anywhere from 1 to 8 months depending on the skull type — greasier animals like bear and hog take much longer to fully degrease than something like a deer or coyote. We'll give you an estimate when we receive your skull.

How do I package a skull to send in?

Double-bag the skull in heavy-duty trash bags or freezer bags. If fresh or thawing, freeze it solid and ship early in the week. Wrap in 2–3 inches of bubble wrap or newspaper, paying extra attention to antlers, horns, and nasal bones. Pack in a sturdy cardboard box with no empty space. Include a note with your name, contact info, and the service you'd like. Reach out through our contact page before shipping so we know it's coming.

Do you accept all species?

We work with most legally obtained North American game and livestock. We cannot accept federally protected species (most raptors, songbirds, marine mammals, etc.). If you're unsure whether we can take your animal, message us before shipping.

Do the teeth and jaw stay attached?

Accepted Answer

On fully finished skulls, loose teeth are glued back into their original sockets and the lower jaw is included but not permanently attached so you can display it open or closed. Beetle-cleaned-only skulls are returned with teeth and jaw loose.

How should I care for my skull once I get it home?

Accepted Answer

Keep it out of direct sunlight (UV can yellow whitened bone over time) and away from high humidity. A soft brush or compressed air is all you need to dust it. Avoid wiping with water or chemicals.
